Five Women Who Dominated 2019
In 2019, women dominated the Best of Charts in all shapes and sounds. From Ariana Grande, to Weyes Blood, or FKA Twigs—here are a few of the magnificent women who made 2019 their year.
Ariana Grande- thank u, next
After splitting with ex-fiancé Pete Davidson, Ariana Grande released thank u, next, with monumental singles such as, “thank u, next,” and “break up with your girlfriend,Ii’m bored” creating a big mood for the remainder of 2019. Thanks to Grande, thank you, next became a phenomenal phrase to signify that yes, I am ready for what is coming and it will be better than ever.
Beyoncé- Homecoming: The Live Album
A year after her legendary Coachella performance, Beyoncé released, Homecoming: The Live Album, providing her fans with the Bey-chella experience we all wanted in on, but couldn’t afford. The album brings the audience to Coachella, allowing us to feel the energy her and her marching band create. Homecoming was the energy boost we needed to get through 2019.
FKA Twigs- MAGDALENE
Between April and Nov. 2019, FKA Twigs quietly teased her emotional, tumultuous, and larger than life album, MAGDALENE. By releasing singles—starting with the tear jerker, “Cellophane” —FKA Twigs was able to break down her audiences’ exterior in order to prepare them for MAGDALENE. The album is a powerful experience reminding listeners that love and heartbreak are reserved for the brave.
Weyes Blood- Titanic Rising
Completing two tours in 2019 statistically proved fans couldn’t get enough of Weyes Blood. Titanic Rising takes the audience through a nostalgic journey where Weyes Blood longs for a time of ease and poster covered bedrooms. However, the album is just as complex as it is simple, Titanic Rising also covers the future state of love and our planet, forcing the audience to understand nostalgia as a potential coping mechanism for a potentially doomed future.
Solange- When I Get Home
Dropping her album on the site BlackPlanet, an almost dormant social media site from the early 2000’s, Solange kept her fans on their toes for When I Get Home. Paying tribute to her hometown, Houston, TX, Solange samples fellow Houstonites such as, Mike Jones and Scarface from Geto Boys. When I Get Home is an album best listened to on repeat and on loud.
