Weird Radar Review: DiCaprio 2 – J.I.D
One of J. Cole’s many artists from the Dreamville label, J.I.D (also stylized as JID) released his current album, DiCaprio 2, November 26, 2018.
Although this may be his 2nd album, this was my first real introduction to actually listening to J.I.D. I first heard of J.I.D on the 4 Your Eyez Only Tour back in 2017, when he was one of the openers for J. Cole, as well as Anderson .Paak, Ari Lennox, and Bas. I remember thinking that he had awesome energy and I sonically could appreciate his sound at the concert.
I’m one of those people that needs to hear an artist’s music before I go to the concert, or else I won’t understand what they’re saying and what kind of message they’re trying to display. So, I couldn’t really understand, or process his words due to it being a loud environment, but the energy from both J.I.D and the crowd and also the production made me feel like, “ok, I need to listen to him once I get home.”
J.I.D describes the DiCaprio 2 album in his interview with No Jumper’s Adam22 as a “clusterf*ck of different stories.” J.I.D also mentions that every song on the album feels “like an individual film,” narrated by DJ Drama, and the rapper also mentioned that the late Mac Miller helped post, produce, and organize almost every song on the album. He also mentions that Leonardo DiCaprio is his favorite actor, and that his original artwork featured a Leonardo DiCaprio lookalike, features Konrad Annerud. But, after a week or so of the release, the artwork was changed to an image of J.I.D designed as a gold trophy, holding the number 2, which I think is very interesting to see the many artwork concepts that they had picked out for the album.
J.I.D has production from Christo, J. Cole, Elite, Nice Rec, Hollywood JB, Wondagurl, and Kenny Beats with features from, A$AP Ferg, J. Cole, 6lack, Ella Mae, BJ the Chicago Kid, Method Man, and Joey Bada$$.
My favorite songs from DiCaprio 2 are:
- Westbrook (feat. A$AP Ferg)
- Off Deez (feat. J. Cole)
- 151 Rum
- Hot Box (feat. Method Man & Joey Bada$$)
- Off da Zoinkys which samples “I’m So Grateful (Keep In Touch)” performed by Crowns of Glory)
- Workin Out (which samples from “Don’t Explain” performed by Helen Merrin)
- Skrawberries (feat. BJ the Chicago Kid) (which samples from “No If’s &’s or But’s” performed by J. J. Barnes)
- Hasta Luego
Revenge of the Dreamers III coming soon! Have you guys seen all of the artists that Dreamville has been working with in the studio? I’m expecting a double disc! ?
