Billie Eilish “When I Was Older” (Music Inspired by the Movie, Roma)

At just 16 years old, she debuted with her single “Ocean Eyes” in 2018 and it went viral with about 132 million streams on Spotify. Billie Eilish is an American singer-songwriter. Known for her edgy style that is definitely juxtaposed with her smooth vocals.

When I first discovered Billie, I was going through artist coming to Lollapalooza 2018 and I saw her name on the setlist. I usually tend to search up who’s going to get a feeling of who I want to go see those four days.

Billie was one of the artists that caught my attention with her breathy, soul-moving voice. I thought it was so unique, and definitely loved what she was doing with her music, especially at such a young age.

Billie Eilish just released her new song ‘When I Was Older.” Eilish told her followers that this song was inspired by Golden Globe winning film “ROMA,” which is available on Netflix.

It is described as “a vivid, emotional portrait of a domestic worker’s journey set against domestic and political turmoil in 1970s Mexico.”

The song itself has an eerie sound that makes the listener feel alienated. Eilish’s voice is very smooth, and slow. With several auto-tuned hymns to add harmonies that work very well throughout the song. She picks up the beat by adding a percussive bass that adds an intensity to the song.

One aspect of the song that I found stylistically cool was how Eilish altered her voice in the middle of the song as she sang the lyric, “When I was older.” It added a broken, staccato feeling. To me, it resembled a familiar noise that you hear when you’re driving down a road with the window open, adding a feeling of reminiscing and reflection.
